Pokémon is a complex and dynamic game, but many of the strategic elements of battle become lost in the single-player experience. While the games remain enjoyable, they would be even more so with the implementation of increased difficulty modes. Pokémon has made great steps by introducing fresh new concepts in recent titles like Pokémon: Sword and Shield. Stats and abilities are especially important in competitive play where many matches are often decided by a single turn, but stats do not have nearly as much of an impact on single-player. This would add an extra layer of difficulty and allow players the opportunity to implement high-level strategies in single-player, something that main series Pokémon games haven't exactly encouraged.Īdditionally, Gym Leaders and opposing trainers Pokémon could also have their natures and EV's maximized to ensure that they truly pose a threat. Trainers would need to adapt to the more powerful challengers and would no longer be able to rely on repeatedly clicking powerful moves, a tactic that often fails in competitive play where human-controlled Pokémon are far more difficult to deal with.

One possibility that could be explored is raising Gym Leader's Pokémon levels to match or exceed the highest level Pokémon that a player currently has. The thrill and tension that accompanies Nuzlucke runs could be greatly amplified if Pokémon were to adapt and implement an official in-game Nuzlocke ruleset. The attachment that trainers form to their Pokémon partners makes the thought of losing them in battle almost unbearable. The stakes suddenly become much higher when this ruleset is applied, with every battle being critical to keeping these often misfit-looking, hastily acquired teams together. Nuzlocke playthroughs offer a new dimension to the Pokémon experience. If the wild Pokémon flees or is accidentally knocked out, the player must proceed through the area without obtaining any additional Pokémon.

Two basic rules must be adhered to at all times during a Nuzlocke run: if the player's Pokémon faints at any point during the playthrough, that Pokémon is then considered dead and must immediately be released additionally, the player is only permitted to catch the first Pokémon encountered in each marked area, and they only have one chance to do so.
